City Roast Organic Colombian Cooagronevada Whole Bean:
The Cooagronevada cooperative was formed in 2007 to help farmers in the region market their organic coffees. The cooperative currently has 72 members, 20% of whom are women, representing eight different villages in the municipality of Santa Marta. The coop is dedicated to promoting the social, environmental and economic well-being of their members and in 2010, they became FairTrade certified through FLO Cert..
The cooperative is located in the river basin of the three most important rivers in the municipality of Santa Marta: Rio Piedras, Manzanares and Toribio. The farms are also on the outskirts of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park. Environmental conservation, as well as ecological and sustainable production practices, are thus extremely important and have become part of the coffee culture in the region. Coffee in Magdalena is mainly shade grown, with both native and fruit trees.
As the cooperative is still relatively young, their initial years have been dedicated to improving the quality of members’ coffee production, primarily focusing on improved processing.
Due to the higher altitudes in the region, the group produces only one crop per year, which starts slightly later than the usual Santa Marta crop. Coffee is hand-picked, hulled, fermented and sun-dried all on individual family farms.
